Return to the Surrey Communicable Disease Control Service web site. SCDCS Information for Schools and Nurseries Surrey Communicable Disease Control Service's has produced Guidance on Infection Control in Schools and Nurseries, which can be downloaded here. Here are some other sources of information that may be of interest/use to schools and nurseries.
Meningitis and meningococcal diseaseInformation (from SCDCS) about the Meningococcal vaccination campaign. Other sources of support, advice and information about meningitis and meningococcal disease.
Head liceI have posted information about head lice, including guidance for schools, here.
Exclusion of ill pupilsExclusion of ill pupils is poster "GUIDANCE on infection control in schools and nurseries", which is produced by the Department for Education and Employment (DfEE) and the Department of Health. Copies can be obtained via NHS supplies new ordering system:
Exclusion of ill pupils is also supposed to be covered in the DfEE/DH schools web site www.wiredforhealth.gov.uk. It is, but is hard to find. If you have a question about a specific condition or disease, use the search tool, and type in the name of the disease. We concur with this national advice with one or two minor caveats: Children with diarrhoea and vomiting should be excluded until they have been back to normal for 48 hours (rather than the 24 hours in the national guidance). Verrucas/ plantar warts. Verruca socks (for swimming) are not recommended by SCDCS.
Community infection control policyMany control of infection issues that relate to schools are covered in the community infection control policy, which can be downloaded from this web site.
Links for children/schoolsYou might be interested to visit www.microbe.org. This site is designed for children and schools. It has information, and some safe and practical exercises - to demonstrate the importance of proper handwashing, for example.
